Robert Gillmor SWLA
Born in 1936 in Berkshire, Robert studied Fine Art at Reading University and taught art at Leighton Park School from 1959 until 1965 when he became a full-time illustrator. He is one of Britain’s leading ornithological illustrators and his distinctive designs have been regularly used for greetings cards and book dust jackets. Influenced by his grandfather Allen Seaby and other artists including Eric Ennion, Robert Hainard and Charles Tunnicliffe, he has developed a distinctive style and achieved popular success as a wildlife artist.
A founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, he has served two terms as its president. In 2001, he was awarded the RSPB medal in recognition of outstanding contribution to bird conservation. Robert designed the RSPB's first Avocet logo. In 1998 after a break of 25 years, Robert resumed printmaking, always his favourite medium.
Each print is made from up to 10 linoleum blocks, one for each colour. These are then printed in sequence, using water-based inks. Additional colours can be achieved by overprinting. The entire printing process is carried out by hand using an 1860 Albion Press. Robert likes to keep the print editions small and are therefore typically only around 20-40. Robert now lives in Cley with his wife Susan Norman, herself an accomplished pastel and oil painter.
Recently the Pinkfoot Gallery hosted an exhibition of the Art from the New Naturalist
series by Robert Gillmor.
For the first time we had the chance to see and purchase colour visuals, doodle sketches
and ideas for cover designs.
As well as these artworks, Robert produced a set of limited edition linocuts of
the covers from
recent New Naturalist jackets.
Although many of the listed artworks in the catalogue sold during the exhibition,
we do still have a few
left which you can view below. Please click on the thumbnails for larger images.
We also have a few exhibition catalogues left, if you would like one, please send
