Brin Edwards SWLA

Having studied biology and ecology, Brin left university with vague ideas of a career in scientific research but soon realised that he was much more interested in the way the natural world looks than in any theories about how it works.

For the next fifteen years Brin worked in Bristol as a freelance illustrator, building up an impressive folio of work for a variety of UK and European book and magazine publishers which include BBC Wildlife magazine, Harper Collins and The National Trust. He has also produced illustrations for major lottery funded projects such as The National Marine Aquarium at Plymouth, Wildwalk@Bristol and The Deep in Hull.

In 2002 Brin moved to a village on the borders of Suffolk and Essex. His recent work is inspired by his experience of and reaction to the local countryside. Recently, Brin has become less inspired by the prescriptive photorealistic style favoured by many publishers.

His current work shows a move away from the world of commercial illustration with its client controlled briefs and tight deadlines to a more expressive way of depicting the natural world. This work is the result of direct observation in the field with an emphasis on strong design and pattern. Put simply, this is what Brin does when left to his own devices; it is what he wants to paint; it is what he invites others to see.
